Obituary

Gloria Larese, 93, loving wife of the late Joseph Larese, passed away peacefully at her
home in Cold Spring January 16th, 2019.

Born November 13th, 1925 in Peekskill NY, she was the daughter of the late Victor
Varella and Mary Sabato Varella. As the eldest of 4 children, she learned early about
responsibility and hard work but she often recounted events from her wonderful
childhood. Growing up on Lincoln Terrace during the Depression, she was proud to
belong to the working class, immigrant neighborhood of Peekskill’s Finktown and she
often told stories about carnivals, ballgames and ice skating on Penelope Pond.
She attended Peekskill High School and during WWII she commuted to the GM plant in
Tarrytown where she riveted the tail section of fighter aircraft. After the war, she and
friends were enjoying a sundae at the Marathon ice cream parlor when Joseph Anthony
Larese, back home after serving in the Pacific, asked her for a date. They were married
Christmas Eve, 1946.

They shared a love of music, and as a formally trained musician, he was always
amazed at how well she played the piano “by ear.” They would often attend Broadway
shows and concerts and she loved telling people the circumstances behind how she
met Luciano Pavarotti. Music was just one of her creative pursuits, and she excelled in
needlework, quilting and fine cooking and always found time for a good game of poker.
She loved nature and art and instilled in her family the wonder and beauty of life.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Stollmer and husband Ray; son John Larese; son
Joe Larese and wife JoAnn; granddaughter Laura Kozelouzek; grandson David
Kozelouzek and wife Coleen Henry; granddaughters Linda Larese; Lauren Good and
husband Gabe; Andrea Larese; grandson Joseph Larese and granddaughter Jennifer
Larese; great-grandchildren Jordan Sotomayor and Gavin and Liam Good; brother
Victor Varella and wife Vivian; brother Leonard Varella; sister Rita Blanco; many dear
nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

To the Larese Family,
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved mother and grandmother. I pray that the memories she created with you and for you will bring you comfort during your time of grief. I hope you find solace in the thought that while death ends a life it never ends a relationship. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
