Mary Lee Jensen was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on December 8, 2018. She was born on September 4, 1930 to the late Fred D. and Nellie V. Johnson in Lawrence County, South Carolina. She attended elementary school in Spartanburg and Greenville, S.C. and graduated from Sterling High School in 1947, becoming an excellent hair stylist.

Mary Lee moved to Washington, D.C. with her mother and family in 1949 where she worked at the Home of the Incurables. She moved to Peekskill, NY in the early 1950s and was employed at FDR VA Hospital in Montrose, New York meeting her future husband, the late Hans D. Jensen. After returning to school and becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse her career included employment at Peekskill Community Hospital, Westledge Nursing Home and Cedar Manor Nursing Home.

Mary Lee was a devoted church member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Over the years, she sang on the Senior Choir, worked on the Kitchen Ministry and was a member of the Seniors Delight. She was affectionately referred to as “Mother Jensen” or “Mother Mary” in recent years and this warmed her heart. It was evident how much she loved her church family as she constantly inquired during her illness “did you send my dues” and saying “I can’t wait to go back to church.” While she was unable to attend service again she was always happy when we could attend service through “live streaming”.

Mary Lee was a member of the Captain Oliver C. Chase, Jr. American Legion, Post 274, Peekskill, New York. Some of her passions were cooking, her church, helping seniors and playing Bingo.

She is predeceased by Juanita, her older sister, brothers Fred Jr. and Clarence and long-time companion Nathaniel J. Mahaffey.

Mary Lee leaves behind her devoted daughter, Romailia (Marx Payne) of Bethesda, Maryland, and sisters Nellie R. Dennis of Mouldin, SC and Jeanette Johnson of Orangeburg, SC in addition a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
