To the family of Joanne Hersh, my deepest condolences. I "met " the Hershes in the 90s when they rented our village house in Italy, and returned every year until the Judge passed away. I corresponded with Joanne and we exchanged news about our lives and children. Judge Hersh said such kinds words to me which consoled me on the passing of my husband. Joanne came to my second wedding ceremony in 2012 driving to Connecticut by herself. She was a loving and gracious, kind friend. I was sorry to learn belatedly of her death. She must have been a wonderful mother and grandmother.

I've known Joanne since 1988 and from the first time I met her I couldn't help but love her. A dynamite lady who I will really miss.

With a heavy heart, I have been digesting the news of Joanne's passing. She was a remarkable neighbor and friend who made a lasting impact on me. When, as a young couple, my husband and I purchased our first home at 1385 Longview Avenue, it was Joanne (and Jerry) who first extended neighborly hospitality to us. They came not only to meet and greet us, but to extend an invitation to a delicious, gourmet dinner (Joanne was quite accomplished in the culinary arts), where we had the opportunity to meet additional neighbors. Such gracious outreach marked the beginning of a lasting relationship with two individuals we grew to treasure. When Jerry passed, we were, of course, deeply saddened. Dressed impeccably, seeing him pass by on his morning walks to the office became part of the fabric of our own daily rituals. Although we'd already moved away at the time of his death, we weren't far, and had continued to remain in touch. However, it was after Jerry's passing that I really came to spend more time with Joanne and to know her more deeply. I've had the privileged pleasure of lunching with her every 3 to 4 months since Jerry's passing in March of 2009. Over the years, our conversations developed an ever-increasing breadth and depth. Joanne was a woman who inspired me to improve myself. She was well-rounded in the truest sense of the phrase...intelligent, witty, kind, and knowing. Her broad life experiences infused her with definite opinions about a wide range of topics and she was unafraid to share them, or to champion for what she believed in...her tenacity was a quality I revered and admired. In addition to her deep intellect, Joanne possessed a great sense of pride in her family, evident in the stories she shared about her husband, her siblings, her children, and grandchildren, and the amazing individuals they were/are. Joanne was fiercely independent, and never wanted it any other way. It is little wonder that she remained active and outgoing until her recent accident rendered her unable. I will so miss my lunchtime friend. Our outings, whether at restaurants, or on her welcoming back porch (always had a summer lunch date there!), will linger for me as favorite times with a strong woman who generously shared her friendship and helped shaped the way I move through the world. Her passing surely leaves a void for me. Rest in peace, were unique in the very best ways, loved, and will be missed.
